If you’re searching for a Leigh Spinners Mill photographer, chances are your looking for Steve Lowrey Photography.
Maybe you’ve already discovered one of the most visually striking and historically rich buildings in Greater Manchester. Since moving my studio here in August 2024 from my smaller base in Atherton, I can honestly say this place is more than just a workspace — it’s an inspiring backdrop with real character, depth, and story.
A Photographer’s Studio Inside Living History
Leigh Spinners Mill isn’t just another converted industrial building. It’s a Grade II listed cotton mill*, originally built in 1913 and expanded in the early 1920s, making it part of the final generation of Lancashire’s great textile mills. Designed by renowned architects Bradshaw, Gass & Hope, the mill stands as a true landmark of the Industrial Revolution era.
The scale of the building is incredible — two massive six-storey mill blocks set across an eight-acre site. At its peak, it housed hundreds of workers and over 200,000 spinning spindles, producing cotton that was exported across the world.
For me as a photographer, that history translates into atmosphere. The textures, the natural light, the industrial features — they all add something you simply can’t recreate in a modern studio.
The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of the Mill
To understand Leigh Spinners Mill properly, you need to understand the wider Lancashire cotton industry. At its height in the 19th century, Lancashire produced half of the world’s cotton, employing hundreds of thousands of workers.
However, the industry declined sharply through the 20th century due to global competition and changing markets, leaving many mills abandoned or derelict. Leigh Spinners was no exception.
What makes this building special today is its revival. It’s now home to over 80 independent businesses, creatives, and community projects, bringing life back into a space that once powered an entire industry. It’s widely recognised as one of the most complete and important surviving mill complexes in the UK.
