Studio or Outdoor Family Photoshoot: Which Is Best for Your Family?

family photographer - studio photoshoot Leigh

When booking a family photoshoot, one of the first choices is whether to have your portraits taken in a studio or outdoors. Both can work beautifully, but they create a different feel. The best option depends on your family, your children’s ages, the style of images you like and how you want to use the finished photographs.

At Steve Lowrey Photography, I offer relaxed family photography from my studio at Spinners Mill in Leigh, and outdoor family photoshoots in suitable local areas around Leigh, Wigan and Greater Manchester.

The Benefits of a Studio Family Photoshoot

A studio family photoshoot gives you control. You do not need to worry about rain, wind, mud, harsh sunlight or people walking through the background. This is one of the biggest advantages, especially in Greater Manchester where the weather is not always helpful.

In the studio, lighting can be controlled properly, backgrounds can be changed, and the session can be kept comfortable for children, parents and grandparents.

Studio family portraits are ideal if you want:

  • clean, classic family images
  • portraits suitable for wall art
  • photographs of babies or younger children
  • multi-generation family portraits
  • a more polished look
  • a session that is not weather dependent

The studio is also a good choice if you have young children who may need breaks, outfit changes or a little time to settle.

The Benefits of an Outdoor Family Photoshoot

Outdoor family photoshoots can feel more natural and playful. They work especially well for families who prefer movement, walking, playing and less formal posing.

Outdoor sessions can include natural backgrounds such as parks, woodland, open spaces or places that mean something to your family. They can be a good option for older children who do not want to feel too posed.

Outdoor family portraits are ideal if you want:

  • relaxed, natural photographs
  • children running, playing or exploring
  • seasonal colours
  • a less formal feel
  • images with more movement
  • photographs that feel like a family day out

Outdoor sessions can work especially well in spring, summer and autumn, when the light and colours are more predictable.

Which Is Better for Young Children?

For babies, toddlers and younger children, the studio is often the easier option. It gives a more controlled environment, and there is less distraction.

That said, some children are happier outdoors where they can move around more freely. If your child does not enjoy sitting still, an outdoor session can sometimes bring out more natural expressions.

The right answer depends on the child. Some children love the attention of a studio session. Others prefer space to move.

Which Is Better for Larger Families?

For larger families, especially those including grandparents, the studio is often the safest choice. It is easier to arrange people, control the light and make sure everyone can be seen clearly.

Outdoor extended family portraits can also work, but they require suitable weather, good access and enough space to arrange everyone comfortably.

If the portraits are for a special family occasion, anniversary, birthday or gift, I would usually recommend the studio for reliability.

What About the Weather?

Outdoor family photoshoots depend on weather and light. A bright sunny day is not always the best option, as harsh sunlight can cause squinting and strong shadows. Soft, slightly overcast light is often much better.

Rain, wind and very cold weather can make outdoor sessions difficult, especially with young children.

A studio photoshoot removes that uncertainty. It can be booked all year round, including evenings, weekends and during the colder months.

Which Style Looks More Natural?

A common mistake is thinking studio portraits have to look stiff. They do not. A studio session can still be relaxed, fun and full of personality.

The difference is mainly the background and control. Studio portraits usually look cleaner and more timeless. Outdoor portraits often feel more casual and lifestyle-based.

Both can look natural if the session is handled properly.

Can We Do Both?

In some cases, yes. If you want a mixture of studio portraits and outdoor images, it may be possible depending on the type of session, time available and location.

For most families, I would recommend choosing one clear style first. That way the session has a better flow and the final gallery feels more consistent.

How to Choose the Right Option

Choose a studio family photoshoot if you want:

  • controlled lighting
  • no weather risk
  • classic portraits
  • wall art
  • younger children
  • grandparents or extended family

Choose an outdoor family photoshoot if you want:

  • natural surroundings
  • playful images
  • movement
  • seasonal colour
  • a relaxed lifestyle feel

Neither option is better for every family. The right choice is the one that suits your family best.
